Reading it without the script

All the text of every page appears. The navigation is an ordinary row of links, so nothing needs opening, and no part of a page waits on code before it is visible.

The availability widget on the front page works with no script at all. It is a plain form that carries two dates to the request page and its button is enabled.

The request button ships switched off, and only the script turns it on. Every check on a request lives in that script, so without it the button would send something unchecked. A note beside it gives the mail address and the telephone.

The keyboard alone

Links, fields and buttons all take focus in the order the document puts them. The focus marker is a three pixel outline in the site's cool accent and is never suppressed. A link that skips into the reading is the first thing on each page.

What a screen reader is given

• One first level heading per page, with levels stepping down one at a time
• United States English declared on the document
• Every photograph described in words, and nothing stated in a picture alone
• Real header cells on every table, and a row header per claim on the claims table
• A label on every field, and the one hidden field is a trap for automated submissions, off the tab order and hidden from assistive software
• Errors announced beside the field they belong to and tied to it

The four parts carry no color

The four parts of a price are encoded by the style of the rule above each row: solid, dashed, dotted, double.

That is decoration and carries nothing on its own. Every row states its part in words and as a number out of four, and nothing on this site depends on seeing a color at any point. Printed in black and white the pages come out correct, and there is nothing anywhere to look up.

Every text pairing was measured and all of them clear the ratio for ordinary text, with the largest clearing the stricter one.

Movement and magnification

The only motion is a short rise as a block arrives, switched off entirely where a browser or system asks for reduced motion. There is nothing that plays, flashes, drifts or sits over the text, and once a block is up it stays up. A failsafe puts everything up a quarter second after load whatever happens.

Text is in relative units and doubles without overlapping. A narrow screen gets one column, and tables too wide to fit are given a scrolling box of their own so the document never moves sideways.

Known to be imperfect

1. At small sizes the dashed and dotted rules look much alike. No information goes missing, since the words are always present, but the shorthand stops working on a phone.
2. The widest table still wants a horizontal drag on a small screen, within its own box rather than moving the page.
3. Testing came down to a keyboard and whatever was installed. No laboratory and no matrix of readers against browsers, and saying so beats implying one.

Send the page and what went wrong to rows@sablebearings.com. Naming the browser and the assistive software helps and is not required. Anything that prevents reading is treated as a defect to repair rather than a suggestion to consider.
